Rena Bransten Projects presents “Reigning Cats and Dogs,” a group show of work that unabashedly puts cats and dogs in their proper position: front and center. Have you never noticed how conversations meander? At Rena Bransten Projects, naturally, they begin with discussions about art: exhibitions at the gallery and in the art world at large; the artists we find exciting; the work we will show at our next art fair. But as anyone who’s ever engaged in a lengthy exchange at Rena Bransten Projects will attest, the topic of conversation will unfailingly veer toward one topic: our pets. Though the staff is divided on which animal companion is best, we all concede that our cats and dogs reign over our lives. Clearly we are not alone. “Reigning Cats and Dogs” includes work by John Bankston, Leon Borensztein, Joan Brown, Roy De Forest, Rupert Garcia, David Hockney, Joan Jonas, Bovey Lee, Charles Linder, Hung Liu, Heather Mattoon, Gabriel de la Mora, Vik Muniz, Peter Opheim, Izhar Patkin, Robb Putnam, Ian Reeves, Neal Slavin, Tara Tucker, Marci Washington, John Waters, William Wegman, Henry Wessel, and Joana Vasconcelos.
