Family moved to Geneva, NY
1899 - 1901
Attended Hobart College in Geneva, NY for two years, transferred to Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.
1901 - 1903
Pre-law studies at Cornell University, New York, NY
1903
Commercial illustrator in New York, working for "Harper's," "Scribner's," "Collier's," "Life," and the "Saturday Evening Post".
1904
Moved to New York City to work as a free-lance illustrator. Married Frances Dorsey.
1907
Traveled to Europe. Painted in southern France. Met Alfred Maurer.
1909
Returned from France. Resumed illustration as a livelihood.
1910
Birth of son William. Moved to a farm in Westport, CT to pursue farming and illustration. Introduced to Alfred Stieglitz by Alfred Maurer. Made first abstract paintings Abstractions Nos. 1-6
1912
First solo exhibition:

, The Gallery of the Photo-Secession (known as 291)
1920
Moved to a houseboat on the Harlem River with artist Helen Torr Weed “Reds.” Purchased forty-two foot yawl “Mona.” For the next seven years Dove lived on his boat in Long Island Sound, Lloyd’s Harbor, Huntington Harbor and Halsite, Long Island.
1926
Sold first painting to Duncan Phillips.
1933
Moved to Geneva, NY to settle family affairs.
1938
Moved to Centerport, Long Island.
1946
Died Huntington Hospital, Long Island
