Anne Chu

London, United Kingdom Saturday, April 8, 2006–Saturday, May 6, 2006

Following the critically acclaimed solo presentation of her work at Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami in 2005, Anne Chu returns to London with a new body of sculpture and drawings for her second solo exhibition at Victoria Miro Gallery. Chu's work is characterized by its fusion of figuration and abstraction, Eastern and Western culture, and ancient and contemporary sources. She is renowned for her ability to work across media integrating wood, bronze, ceramic, resin and fabric into her practice in such a way that one medium is animated by another. Textiles take on the appearance of carvings; sculptures become painted canvases. Chu's pieces are imbued with a commanding presence, simultaneously situating the viewer in the company of familiar cultural iconography and something quite unknown.
