This May, Victoria Miro Gallery presents The Minus, an exhibition of new work by Tal R. This is the third in a suite of four shows where the starting point has been a self-imposed restriction; a colour palette of murky black, white, yellow, red, forest green, chocolate and bubblegum pink. This restriction offers the artist a renewed freedom to explore the possibilities of content, shape and form, with particular focus on the empty spaces of the canvas – the ‘minus’ of the exhibition title. Central to Tal R’s new body of work is the introduction of an ornamental border around the edge of the canvas, signifying a departure from the bold horizontal colour fields characteristic of his previous work. Acclaimed for his exuberant and deceptively simple works, these paintings delight in a dirty minimalism that transforms their picture book naiveté into a darker, menacingly archaic world.
