Kit Keith: New and Used

Kit Keith: New and Used

Saint Louis, MO, USA Friday, September 10, 2010–Saturday, October 16, 2010

Reception for the Artist: Friday, September 10 , 6 - 8 pm

Inspired by outsider art and pop artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Jim Dine, Kit Keith often will paint over found imagery from thrift stores, old magazines and advertisements. Kit loves "beautiful illustrations" and that "everything was done by hand” during a time when the convenience of a computer font was unimaginable. Undoubtedly, this appreciation comes from the work to which her father, a self-taught artist, introduced her, as well as her mother's appreciation for antiques. Kit's iconic portraits of elegant, wistful, figures, carefully placed on maps, old ledgers, and discarded papers are stoic, yet look as though they want to tell their stories.

Kit Keith currently lives and works in St. Louis. In New York, she has exhibited with OK Harris and at Exit Art. Her illustrations have also been featured in The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine.
