Alex Voinea

(Romanian, born 1973)

Alex Voinea is a Romanian abstract painter who creates vibrant compositions that emphasize the fluidity of the medium. His work is similar to Gerhard Richter’s series in which he uses a squeegee to wipe paint across large canvases. Voinea employs a vibrant color palette to create multiple instances of contrasting values and hues. The artist’s work is inspired by his experimentations with sound, in which he painted over a pair of speakers to allow vibration to manipulate his paint’s texture. Born in Romania in 1973, he participated in the Romanian revolution as a teenager, and recalls how the conflict gave him “an extraordinary acuteness of the senses, where even the most insignificant objects seemed larger than normal.” The artist now lives in Sitges, Spain and has shown his work in various European cities, including Strasbourg, Milan, Venice, Barcelona, and most recently in Brussels and Paris.
