Ashley Collins

Ashley Collins is a contemporary American painter. Her large-scale collaged paintings of horses frequently contain overlaid text, print media, and representational imagery atop her sepia-toned compositions. Notably, Collins employs a sense of spectacle in her practice, often incorporating elements such as fire, or displaying paintings on 50-foot cranes during her exhibitions. Born on February 2, 1967 in Palo Alto, CA, she arrived in Los Angeles in 1989 to pursue her artistic career, immediately met with difficult circumstances; Often homeless, Collins worked several jobs to afford art materials, eventually deciding to open a self-representing gallery in Venice, CA. Collins fabricated a male persona to help bolster interest in her work in the face of a patriarchal art market, and soon rose to critical and commercial success. Collins’ work in included among the collections and exhibitions of such cultural institutions as the Metropolitan Museum Manila in the Philippines, the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach, and the Singapore Art Museum.
