Astrid Klein

(German, born 1951)

Astrid Klein is a contemporary German artist known for her composite works of collaged photographs with text. Klein’s photoworks are produced through enlarging small magazine images and subjecting them to a number of printing techniques to transform their original meaning. Born on May 20, 1951 in Cologne, Germany, she went on to study at the Köln International School of Design, where she began to work with photography. Unlike other German photographers of the time such as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Klein’s work explored identity politics and mass media imagery. The artist continues to live and work in Cologne, Germany. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Tate Modern in London, the Collection Falckenberg in Hamburg, and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, among others.
