Barbara Edelstein (American) is a native of Los Angeles, and received her MFA from Claremont Graduate University. She currently lives in Shanghai, China, dividing her post-graduate time between New York City and Asia. This exposure to Eastern and Western cultures has impacted her work both aesthetically and conceptually. While her educational focus was in sculpture, she has bolstered her practice with multimedia work, including installation, video, and drawing.
The interface of nature and urban life serves as the foundation for Edelstein's work. Edelstein brings to focus often overlooked elements of the natural world, and uses her various media as transformative devices. Branches, leaves, water, shadows, and reflections are observed in the world, internalized by the artist and translated into poetic interpretations in two- and three-dimensional works. She often employs industrial materials and current technology in combination with traditional techniques, such as ink on paper and bronze sculpture.
Edelstein's discerning practice of integrating various processes creates seamless discourse and connection across her individual applications. Her process also fosters an array of contrasts—permanent and impermanent, hard and soft, old and new. Her work as a whole expresses the importance of integrating nature into everyday life in order to preserve it.
