Danh Vo
(Danish, born 1975)
Biography
Danh Vo is a Vietnamese-born Danish contemporary artist known for his Conceptual Art addressing issues of self-identity and cultural heritage. Throughout his practice, Vo has used objects and documents that are representative of America or Western values to create emotionally charged sculpture. By covering these with gold leaf, his work serves as a means of concretizing the longstanding Imperial effects Western consumerism has had on immigrants hoping to reach a better life. Born in 1975 in Bà Rja, Vietnam, Vo and his family fled through Saigon after the Communists had over taken the country. While attempting to escape by boat, his family was picked up by a Danish freighter and went on to settle and becoming naturalized citizens in Denmark. Vo has participated in the 2013 and 2015 Venice Biennales, and his works can be found are in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Kunstmuseum Basel, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others. He lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
