David Altmejd

Biography
David Altmejd is a contemporary Canadian artist known for his imaginative sculptures of giant human bodies. Employing unconventional materials, including taxidermy, bondage gear, plastic flowers, and faux jewelry, Altmejd creates sculptures that explore complex and symbolic narratives. “I believe in the power that art has to generate meaning,” he has explained. “I believe in the capacity of art to build its own intelligence.” Born in 1974 in Montreal, Canada, he received his BFA from the Univserité du Québec à Montréal and his MFA from Columbia University in 2001. He was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial and chosen to represent Canada in the 2007 Venice Biennale. Altmejd continues to live and work in New York, NY. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, among others.
