Diane Tuft
(American, born 1947)
Biography
Diane Tuft is a global warming activist and mixed media artist whose primary focus since 1998 has been environmental photography. She photographs mostly glaciers and snow formations, capturing how they change the landscape over time. In her photo series The Arctic Melt (2015–2016), the artist utilized infrared film to document mountain glaciers in Norway and Russia, untouched by humans, as examples of a landscape that was slowly, but surely, melting. The work brought attention to the geographical features of the arctic, and reminded viewers of the areas vital role in our global ecosystem. “It is more important than ever to curb carbon emissions in order to slow down its rapid melt,” the artist remarked on the project. “I hope that my images of this fragile landscape will stimulate discussion and influence policy that will focus on protecting life on earth.” Born in East Hartford, CT, Tuft went on to graduate from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT with a BA in mathematics in 1969. She then received an MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 1989, and while she was initially interested in painting, she ultimately switched to photography. The artist lives and works in New York, NY. Tuft’s works are held in the collections of the International Center of Photography in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, NY.
