Erwin Kettemann

(German, 1897–1971)

Erwin Kettemann, born in Munich, Germany in 1897, was a German artist best known for his landscape paintings of the Alps. Kettemann's works employ a systematic approach and balanced composition, wherein rocky terrains are cut through by streams, paths, and fences. Sometimes populated by sparse flora, architecture, and figures, Kettemann’s backgrounds almost always feature the jagged and towering faces of the Alps. Sometimes sourced from studies of the Dolomites in northeastern Italy and sometimes of the German Wetterstein, his work is composed of lush, misty pastel pinks and blues contrasted against a central swath of rich brown and black. Kettemann's style is exemplary of traditional German landscape painting at the turn of the 20th century. He died in 1971 in Munich, Germany.
