Fritz Wagner

(German, 1896–1939)

Fritz Wagner was a German still life and genre painter. Known for his warm-hued paintings of tavern scenes, revelrous drinkers, and card players, Wagner dressed Bavarian peasants in period costumes and placed them in genre settings. Born on May 15, 1896, in Munich, Germany, Wagner received his formal training at the Academie de la Brera de Milan, and separately, under artists Carl Roth and Robert Seitz in Munich. In his life, Wagner traveled to Italy, Hungary, and Romania to study art, and became a member of the National Association of Visual Artists of Germany. The artist died on April 3, 1939 in Munich, Germany.
