Greer Lankton (American, 1958–1996) was an American artist best known for creating life-like dolls and figures. Born Greg Lankton to a Presbyterian minister and his wife, Lankton underwent sexual reassignment surgery at the age of 21. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and earned her BA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 1981. Her work is highly personal, focusing largely on issues of sexuality, gender, and the effects of consumerism. Lankton’s dolls are characterized by their exquisite stitching and elaborate clothing, and each is imbued with a unique personality. Her work was the subject of solo exhibitions at Civilian Warfare, in New York, NY, and was included in both the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy and the Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York, NY in 1995. A solo exhibition of her work opened at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, PA in 1996, just weeks before her untimely death at the age of 38.
