Guillermo Trujillo

(Panamanian, born 1927)

Guillermo Trujillo is a contemporary Panamanian artist best known for his paintings which meld indigenous iconography, political themes, and Western European techniques. The art historian Carol Damian once said of his work, “Inspired to synthesize the collective memory of the indigenous peoples of Panama and the artifacts of their heritage, Trujillo creates images of fantasy and grace that are as fantastic as they are contemporary.” Born in Horconcitos, Panama in 1927, he was fascinated with pre-Columbian artifacts and rituals from a young age. Trujillo went on to study architecture in his home country before moving to Spain where he studied at the Moncloa School of Ceramics and the Esculea Superior de Arquitectura during the mid-1950s. Retuning to Panama in 1959, he taught architecture over the following two decades while also producing prints, sculptures, and paintings. Though he is now retired from teaching he continues to live and work in Panama.
