Biography
Howard Schatz is a contemporary American photographer known for his exploration of the human form. While he has focused on the bodies of athletes and dancers, Schatz’s best-known works are a series of a photos made with models moving underwater. “I could see that under the water there was this beautifully weightless environment. So, for the next six months, I began to explore ways of making images underwater,” he explained of the series. Born on July 30, 1940 in Chicago, IL, Schatz studied at the University of Illinois and later attended medical school at John Hopkins University. Setting up his ophthalmology practice in San Francisco, Schatz left his successful career in medicine to become a photographer during the mid-1990s. He has gone on to publish a number of photobooks and his works have since been included in Sports Illustrated, Time, GQ Italia, and Vogue. The artist currently lives and works between Sherman, CT and New York, NY. Today, his photographs are held in the collections of the International Center of Photography in New York, the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, and the Oakland Museum of California, among others.
