(American, born 1978)
Biography
Isca Greenfield-Sanders is a contemporary American painter known for her mixed-media depictions of vintage photographs. To make her works, she scans photographs—ranging from bathers at the ocean to Korean War paratroopers—prints them and then paints over them. “I’m looking for images that recall motifs from art history, although inadvertently to the photographer who shot them,” she has said. Born on October 6, 1978 in New York, NY, she is the daughter of the photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders. She went on to receive her BA in both mathematics and visual arts at the Brown University in 2000, and met her future husband the artist Sebastian Blanck the following year in Rome. Greenfield-Sanders currently lives and works in New York, NY. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, among others.
