James Casebere

(American, born 1953)

James Casebere is an American photographer best known for photos of scenes constructed in the studio from paper, models, and other materials. His interest in recreating model versions of places and reintroducing them into the world as photographs stems from a desire to reroute the psychological connections viewers have towards photographs. Born in 1953 in Lansing, MI, Casebere attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, followed by the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York and CalArts for his MFA. His early work is associated with the Pictures Generation of the 1980s, which included artists such as Cindy Sherman, Laurie Simmons, Robert Longo, and Barbara Kruger. Today, Casebere’s works are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others. He lives and works in New York, NY.
