James Prosek

(American, born 1975)

James Prosek is an American artist best known for his watercolors of trout. These intricate and detailed paintings are often included in books that promote awareness of the species’ endangerment due to ongoing environmental concerns. Born on May 23, 1975 in Stamford, CT, Prosek went on to study English Literature at Yale University. He is an avid fisherman and travel writer whose interests in conservation and taxonomy are comparable to those of John James Audubon. “I’m less interested in the animals themselves than I am in the way we see them. My paintings of trout are not depictions of actual fish; they are interpretations of those fish,” He has said of his work. “The soul is more important to me than the object.” His works have been shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT. Prosek lives and works in Easton, CT.
