John Zurier (American, b.1956) is a Contemporary artist best known for his abstract, luminous canvases that use hand-mixed colors. Born in Santa Monica, CA, Zurier received his BA and MFA from the University of California, Berkeley.
He employs a range of brushwork and surface techniques to highlight the various textures of the canvas, often using distemper (a tempera paint made with dry pigments in animal glue) in thin layers to capture atmospheric and lighting effects. In his paintings, he focuses on incorporating the differences between cotton and linen surfaces, the weave of each canvas, and the unique characteristics of tempera versus oil paint. His work is inspired by styles such as Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Italian Renaissance painting, and Japanese painting and poetry.
Zurier has taught at the California College of the Arts and was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. His work is included in the collections of the Colby College Museum of Art in Maine, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Microsoft Corporation Art Collection in Washington, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He currently lives and works in Oakland, CA.
