Jules de Balincourt

(French, born 1972)

Jules de Balincourt is a contemporary French painter known for his ability to meld diverse subjects and spaces into single a cohesive image. His colorful and stylized work is praised for evoking narrative, cultural, and historical identifiers while simultaneously maintaining a focus on painterly formal elements. “Even though the images look really thought-out and composed, most of the time, these pieces come from a purely intuitive place,” the artist has said, “a place where in the initial steps of making an image, there is no regard to space, place or regard to capturing something real.” De Balincourt’s imagery ranges from geometric abstraction to Pop-like figuration of Americana themes, reminiscent of Jasper Johns’ playful approach to the appropriation of imagery. Born in 1972 in Paris, France, he went on to receive his MFA from Hunter College in New York in 2005. He has been exhibited at many prominent galleries and institutions, including the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and his works are also in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, among others. He lives and work in Brooklyn, NY.
