Lawrence Carroll

(Australian, 1954–2019)

Lawrence Carroll is an Australian-born American painter. He is best known for is deconstructed abstract “table paintings” made from scrap wood and cardboard, sculpturally arranged and rearranged as the artist works. The surfaces of Carroll’s work often appear monochromatic, but upon closer inspection a complex network of fractures and repairs are revealed. Ranging in scale from small to monumental, these works have been hung on the wall and as part of larger, floor-based installations. Born in 1954 in Melbourne, Australia, the artist moved with his family to Santa Monica, CA in 1958, going on to study at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Carroll has participated in international exhibitions such as documenta IX, and his work can be found in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others. He lives and works between New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA.
