Lee Paine, born 1941, is a contemporary American photographer who has always been determined to change the rules of how photography is created and perceived. Self-taught in darkroom procedures before she learned 35 mm camera techniques, and later moving enthusiastically into digital photography, she was never bound by traditional photographic concepts. Lee’s experiments with new ways to use photographic tools, technology and materials, she is most recently exhibiting her distinctive “primitive” 12 mp cell phone camera images, which are printed on large scale canvases to which she adds paint. Based in reality, her subjects always are presented in an intensely emotional and personal way, intentionally raising questions about technique and interpretation.
