Liam Gillick

(British, born 1964)

Liam Gillick is a British contemporary artist often associated with relational aesthetics. He has worked in a variety of media, including sculpture, printmaking, architecture, graphic design, film, and music. Gillick’s large architectural pieces often have an industrial quality, including Local Discussion Screen, which features bright red panels attached to a metal framework. “I remain interested in the potential of art, except I've always been more struck by applied Modernism than high Modernism,” he has explained. “It's partly because of feminist theory and being brought up in the 1970s, with questioning who is speaking, and why, and what authority they're carrying.” Born in 1964 in Aylesbury, United Kingdom, he went on to graduate from Goldsmith College in London in 1987. In the early 1990s, Gillick along with Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas became a part of what is known as the YBAs (Young British Artists) group which dominated the London art scene. In 2002, the artist was featured in his first major solo exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. That same year, Gillick was nominated for the Turner Prize for a ceiling display comprised of colorful glass and acrylic sheets. He currently lives and works in New York, NY. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Modern in London, among others.
