Born in Loosduinen, a little way from the Hague, Kleijn was a pupil of Andreas Schelfhout (1787 – 1870), a prominent artist of the Romantic School. Kleijn adopted many of Schelfout’s artistic techniques, painting with great detail and with a careful finish. Kleijn’s paintings evoke a timeless Dutch landscape, many of which are set in winter and at the water’s edge. A highly successful artist, Kleijn exhibited in The Hague and Amsterdam between 1842 and 1894. He produced lithographs in addition to his paintings. The works of Lodewijk Kleijn are represented at the Rijksprentenkabinet and Museum Fodor in Amsterdam, Haags Gemeentemuseum and Gemeentearchief in The Hague and the Rijksmuseum Kroller-Muller Otterlo, Gemeentemuseum Arnhem.
