Timeline
At first sight, Fernandez’s work is bewildering. The realism of his representation reaches such high levels that the viewer could doubt his technique: painting. In the style of the great Spanish masters such as Velásquez or Zurbarán, Fernandez uses oil which he superposes in glazes on wooden panels. Remarkably, he was able to use his experience as a scene painter and the technical skills he has acquired throughout his long years working in the service of a more personal artistic approach. Fernandez thus develops a pictorial writing; he develops complex compositions based on daily objects. Combining pictures of his childhood, figurines, toys and other knick-knacks he finds in his studio, he arranges them in a close-up similar to a microphotographic shot. The precision of their selection and juxtaposition creates unique settings that carry hidden symbolism. In a silent world, each of Fernandez’s pieces is an invitation to a poetic and philosophical reflection on time, history and the human condition.
