Mark Beard

(American, born 1956)

Mark Beard is an American artist best known for his set designs, paintings, and sculptures. Beard uses multiple artist aliases to explore different styles from art history, including Impressionism, German Expressionism, and Art Nouveau sculpture. Over the course of his career, the artist has worked under the names Bruce Sargeant, Hippolyte-Alexandre Michallon, and Brechtholdt Streeruwitz—all of which spoof the names of painters from art history. Born in 1956 in Salt Lake City, UT, he designed more than 20 theatrical set for major productions in New York, London, Cologne, Vienna, and Frankfurt. In 2013, he was the subject of the retrospective “Alter Weis” at ClampArt in New York. His works are currently held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Utah Museum of Fine Art in Salt Lake City, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Albertina in Vienna, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, among others. Beard lives and works in New York, NY.
