1961: Became a full-time freelancer for the London-based Observer
1962: Covered the Algerian War and then moved to Central Africa
1966–1971: Moved to Asia, photographing in Vietnam
1971: Member of Magnum Photos
1973–1975: Covered the Yom Kippur War and then worked in Cambodia
1977: Covered Asia from his base in Thailand
1980: Moved to New York to assume the presidency of Magnum Photos, a post he held for a record five years
2008: Died at home in West London on 19th March
