Born in Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, Roger Middlebrook (British, b.1929) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. Following National Service, he moved to Sweden in the early 1950s, working as a freelance artist and concentrating on landscape and portraiture.
After 13 years in Sweden, he returned to England in 1965. By 1970, he had moved away completely from technical illustration, and, in 1980, he became self employed. In 1990, he began to paint aviation subjects, which, by pure chance, contributed to the rekindling of his Swedish connection.
In 1995, Middlebrook was honored with a solo exhibition at the Swedish Air Force Museum. He has exhibited regularly in England, Scotland, and Sweden, and has also shown his work in Norway and the United States. Today, he is a full Member of the Guild of Aviation Artists and a Fellow of the Society of Architectural Illustrators.
He has received numerous artistic awards and trophies during his life, including the Society of British Aerospace Companies Trophy, the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, the Aviation Painting of the Year Award, the E.J. Riding Memorial Award, the Westland Helicopter Trophy, the Winsor & Newton Award, the Qantas Trophy, and the Roy Nockolds Trophy.
