Ryan Sullivan
(American, born 1983)
Biography
Ryan Sullivan is a contemporary American artist known for his richly textured paintings. Built from several layers of materials such as resin, fiberglass, and epoxy, Sullivan’s works have the physicality of a rock formation or graffitied concrete wall. “The whole point of having these layers is to create this object that has a physical potential of its own,” he has explained. Born in 1983 in New York, NY, Sullivan received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005, and later worked as a studio assistant for both Laura Owens and Ross Bleckner. The artist lives and works in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, among others.
