Ryan Sullivan (American, b.1983) is a Contemporary abstract painter known for his richly textural surfaces. Working with the canvas laid horizontally, Sullivan pours different kinds of paint—such as commercial enamel, latex, or spray paint—layering them together to achieve deliberately bubbled or cracked finishes. Born in New York, Sullivan studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and later worked as a studio assistant for the influential painters
Laura Owens and
Ross Bleckner. He has had solo exhibitions with Maccarone Gallery in New York, Hydra’s Workshop in Greece, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami, and Sadie Coles HQ in London. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
