Sarah Lucas (British, b.1962) is a photographer, sculptor, and installation artist, and an active member of the Young British Artists circle that emerged in London in the 1990s. Lucas briefly attended the Working Men’s College and the London College of Printing, before completing her studies at Goldsmiths College in 1987. Best known for her brash and ironic self-portraits, Lucas has addressed many sexual stereotypes in her art, often by adopting the very language of the aggressor. In 2000, Lucas had a solo exhibition at the Sadie Coles Gallery in London, The Fag Show, where her work demonstrated an affinity for the cigarette as a new medium in art. Lucas’s art has always been concerned with materiality, and many of her works allow objects to take on new meanings. She often uses furniture as a stand-in for the human body, and occasionally uses objects such as cigarettes to create the human form. In 1996, the BBC documentary Two Melons and a Stinking Fish was released, documenting Lucas’s artistic career and life.
