Sergio Roffo (American/Italian, born )

Sergio Roffo (American/Italian, b. 1953) has been inspired by the work of American traditional painters such as George Inness and Albert Bierstadt. His representations of coastal landscapes reveal a luminous, masterful feeling, and brings to his artwork the serenity and beauty of New England. A precise sense of value and perspective informs and defines his work.

Born in Italy, Roffo came to America as a child in 1963. He studied at the Vesper George School of Art, and then exhibited with the Copley Society in Boston and the American Artists Professional League. He is an elected member of the Guild of Boston artists and the Society of Illustrators in New York and is one of the youngest artists to be designated a “Copley Master” by the Copley Society of Boston.

Roffo’s paintings have earned many awards, including two prestigious Grumbacher Gold Medals, the Yankee Sagendorph Award, and the Massachusetts Duck Stamp in 1994.

His New England landscapes have been exhibited at numerous museums, including the Fitchburg Art Museum, the Springfield Art Museum, and the Salmagundi Club in New York.

He begins each painting with an eight-by-12-inch sketch on location, prior to creating a larger image. He uses light to dramatize and strengthen each composition, and occasionally utilizes photo references to ensure the accuracy of design. He makes use of both watercolors and oils to capture the mystique and serenity that surrounds the deserted beach at sunrise, or the majestic weathered homes of New Englanders that have survived the seas and the harsh winter storms.
