Sharon Lockhart is a contemporary American photographer and filmmaker known for works such as Goshogaoka (1998) and Lunch Break (2008). Her formal approach, paired with performance and sociological subject matter lends Lockhart’s works a unique mixture of improvisation and narrative. “I love the process of making the work: I get to go deep into the research, the pre-production and the relationships I develop with the dancers and the film crew,” she has explained. Born on June 5, 1964 in Norwood, MA, she received her BFA from the San Francisco Institute of Art in 1991 and her MFA from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena in 1993. In 2017, Lockhart was chosen to be included in the Polish pavilion at the Venice Biennale for her project Little Review, which was based on a popular magazine during the 1920s and 1930s written entirely by children in Poland. The artist currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.
