Suzanne McClelland (American, born )

Suzanne McClelland (American, b.1959) is a New York-based abstract artist well known for her language-based works. After receiving her BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, McClelland began exhibiting internationally in the early 1990s. As a painter, McClelland is particularly interested in the mechanics of verbal communication, particularly the gap between what is heard and what is read, and her art often explores the nature and shape of language. Her work is included in the public collections of the Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Detroit Institute of Art, and the Miami Art Museum, among others. She is the recipient of a AXA artist award and a Nancy Graves Grant for Visual Arts, and was a featured artist at the 2014 Whitney Biennial. McClelland lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
