Thomas Lawrence
(British, 1769–1830)
Biography
Thomas Lawrence was an esteemed English portraitist. Known for his deft paintings of British royalty, his works provide tremendous insight into European aristocracy during the Napoleonic Wars. Born on April 13, 1769 in Bristol, United Kingdom, Lawrence was something of an artistic prodigy. Though he had no formal training, by the age of 10, he was drawing and selling portraits of clientele at his family’s inn. In 1787, he moved to London, where he spent three months at the Royal Academy of Art. During his time there his preferred medium changed from pastel to oil paint. By 1792, King George III had appointed him Painter-in-Ordinary to his Majesty. Following in the footsteps of painters like Joshua Reynolds, Lawrence began receiving commissions to paint many of the leaders of Europe. The artist died on January 7, 1830 in London, United Kingdom. Today, his works are included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the National Gallery in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
