Tina Barney
(American, born 1945)
Biography
Tina Barney is a contemporary American photographer whose portraits capture the lifestyles and family dynamics of those around her. The majority of her works are well-orchestrated scenes, the figures and settings carefully arranged to portray the image she desires. “When people say that there is a distance, a stiffness in my photographs that the people look like they do not connect, my answer is, that this is the best we can do,” she has explained. “This inability to show physical affection is in our heritage.” Born on October 27, 1945 in New York, NY, she studied at the Sun Valley Center for Arts and Humanities in Ketchum, ID, from 1976 to 1979. Just before returning to New York, Barney began photographing people in color using a large format view camera. Upon her homecoming, the artist turned her camera upon family as well as acquaintances such as George Condo. The resulting images of the 1980s and 1990s became the foundation for photobooks such as Theater of Manners (1997). Barney currently lives and works between Westerly, RI and New York, NY. Today, the artist’s photographs are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others.
