Ulrica Hydman-Vallien

(Swedish, 1938–2018)

Ulrica Hydman-Vallien is a Swedish artist known for her painted glass vessels and stylized figurative paintings. Working in acrylic, watercolor, and textile fabrics, Hydman-Vallien has received significant recognition for her glasswork throughout Scandinavia and beyond. Her designs can be found on everything from fine art objects to cell phone cases. “Desire, energy, passion—I can love and hate all at the same time. I’m both argumentative and totally committed,” said the artist. “With glass, everything is possible.” Born on March 24, 1938 in Stockholm, Sweden, she studied at the College of Arts in Stockholm, where she worked with the renowned Swedish ceramicist and designer Stig Lindberg. The artist has produced glassworks for Kosta Boda Art Gallery since 1972, and currently lives in Stockholm, Sweden. Her pieces can be found in the collections of the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
