Walt Disney Studios

(American, established 1923)

Walt Disney Studios is a prominent American animation studio responsible for producing classic films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Fantasia (1940), and The Lion King (1994). Founded on October 16, 1923 as the The Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in Hollywood, CA, by the brothers Roy and Walt Disney, their first production was the Alice Comedies (1923–1927). This featured a live-action actress within an animated world, and accompanied by music in theaters. The company was soon renamed Walt Disney Studios, and relocated to Hyperion Avenue in the Silverlake neighborhood. It was there that Walt began creating several of his groundbreaking animated shorts, including Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (1927). Steamboat Willie (1928), the celebrated cartoon short, marked Mickey Mouse’s first on-screen appearance, as well the first use of fully synchronized sound in a cartoon. Beginning in the late 1940s, Disney began producing live-action features and television programs. The studio lot was subsequently expanded during the 1950s, to include sound stages and production craft facilities. Over the decades, the company has expanded into producing major theme parks, acquired film subsidiaries as well as Pixar Animation Studios which produced the computer generated animation Toy Story (1995). In 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm Ltd., the studio responsible for the Star Wars film series
