Wayne White

(American, born 1957)

Wayne White is a contemporary American artist known for his text paintings. In 2000, he began painting words and phrases on thrifted lithographs. “When you think about it, you’re surrounded by giant letters and words everywhere,” White has said. “We take for it granted, but your whole landscape, the whole American landscape is nothing but giant letter forms. It’s a classic kind of American landscape motif too.” Born on September 17, 1957, in Chattanooga, TN, the artist has had an interesting and varied career, including working as a puppeteer on the television show Pee Wee’s Playhouse and directing the award-winning music video for the Smashing Pumpkins song Tonight, Tonight. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. The artist’s works are held in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and the Laguna Art Museum in California.
