William Goldman
(American, died 1922)
Biography
William Goldman was an American commercial photographer known posthumously for his images of prostitutes in brothels. Much like the New Orleans-based photographer E.J. Bellocq, Goldman’s photographs could never have been exhibited during his lifetime due to their explicit nudity. Living in Reading, PA, Goldman worked as portrait photographer of the city’s upper class citizens. The artist’s private photographs were made in his studio and a luxurious brothel during the 1890s. Few details are known about Goldman other than his death date in January of 1922. The collection of photographs was rediscovered in 2007, when Robert Flynn Johnson a former curator at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco purchased them at a postcard fair in Concord, CA. “What we can surmise from his photographs is that Goldman was a truly sensitive human being both artistically and emotionally,” Johnson wrote of Goldman.
