Yuliy Yulevich (Julius) Klever

Yuliy Yulevich (Julius) Klever was a Russian painter best known for his highly mystical, sublime and Romantic landscape paintings. Set in dense Russian forests at night or dusk, Klever’s work was rendered in stylized, high-contrast aesthetic that featured intricate detail and saturated hues. Born on January 19, 1850, he began his artistic career at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1867 before proceeding to become a member and professor of the St. Petersburg Academy in 1881, which still holds a majority of his paintings in its collection. Klever died in Leningrad on December 24, 1924.
