Born November 29, in Swindon, Wiltshire
1943 - 1948
Attended the Commonwealth Secondary Grammar School in Swindon and received the School Leaving Certificate of Education from the London Matriculation Board
1949 - 1951
Worked as a scientific assistant at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell, Berkshire, and attended the Oxford Polytechnic on a day release basis to study for the National Diploma in chemistry
1952 - 1954
Fulfilled the obligatory duty as National Serviceman in the Royal Air Force
1955
Entered the Swindon School of Art
1956
Applied to and was accepted by the Slade School of Fine Art in London for a three year full time painting course with a government undergraduate grant
1957
Received the Pre Diploma Certificate in Fine Art from the Swindon School of Art
Entered the Slade School of Fine Art and studied particularly with Ceri Richards and Keith Vaughan
1960
Awarded the Slade Diploma in Fine Art and a Boise Travelling Scholarship
1961
Travelled in Italy on the Boise scholarship. Worked at Jean Pons’ lithographic printing studio in Paris
1962 - 1972
Taught part time at several art schools including the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham and the Hornsey College of Art in London
1973
Appointed Principal Lecturer in Painting at the Central School of Art and Design in London
1977
Received a British Arts Council Major Award that enabled him to take a term off from teaching
1978
Executed a mural commissioned by IBM (United Kingdom) for their office and warehouse buildings in Greenford Middlesex, designed by Norman Foster Associates
1986
Appointed Head of Painting at the Central/St Martins College of Art and Design in London
1989
Resigned from full-time teaching to concentrate on his own work
2003
Nominated for the Jerwood Painting Prize
