Timeline
Storm Thorgerson was born in London in 1944, and studied both a BA in English at Leicester University and a MA in Film and TV at The Royal College of Art. He is best known for his inspired artwork and designs that have featured on four decades of Pink Floyd album covers. As part of the design team ‘Hipgnosis’ his work has been featured on albums by: Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, 10cc, Black Sabbath, Paul McCartney, XTC and The Beatles. He has written several books on album cover art, and has directed numerous videos, commercials and TV documentaries. He currently works from his disheveled studio in North London.
‘ He is a perfectionist in his pursuit of the completely absurd. Nobody else in the world would go to such Herculean efforts to line up dozens and dozens of identical and immaculately made up beds on a beach for no reason at all. It’s dumbfounding. You know that is was not a momentary lapse of reason. It must have been at least a month of meticulously deranged behaviour.’ - Douglas Adams - foreword to ‘Eye of the Storm, The Album Graphics of Storm Thorgerson’
