GERHARD RICHTERS abstract work will be presented in an important retrospective exhibition at the Met Breuer,  which coincides with the Armory Show 2020. The goal is to recognize the  great importance of the artists abstract work by curating a show around  a core body of around 20 small to medium sized paintings and works on  paper of his.

Paintings by MAX ERNST  will form the historical backdrop to the show. All his works are the  result of a conceptual search for images rather than being the depiction  of preconceived ideas. This conceptual approach represents the  intellectual bottom line GERHARD RICHTER  works along too. Purely figurative and purely abstract works coexist  since the late 1970’s and from the 1990’s onwards a third discipline of  abstract painting on photography comes into play. The artist's  analytical approach in all three disciplines displays Richters distrust  in the image and its validity. The strong conceptualism of JOSEF ALBERS will act as another historical point of reference while the photography of BERND AND HILLA BECHER and minimalist paintings by IMI KNOEBEL document the relentless drive to speak about the possibilities of painting among this generation of post-war artists.
