From the 8th of November to the 3rd of December, the team at Hidden Gallery in Brighton are exhibiting an extraordinary collection of monochrome artworks celebrating everything that can be achieved with two tones. Original, hand-signed and limited-edition prints are being showcased, by leading artists such as Tracey Emin, Pablo Picasso, Bridget Riley, Keith Haring and many more!
In the absence of colour, form, structure, and composition come to the fore. For example, Pablo Picasso had a lifelong interest in removing colour from his paintings, sculptures, and prints. Perhaps most notably, in 1937 the artist selected a monochromatic palette to depict the bombing of a civilian village in northern Spain at the height of the Spanish Civil War. “Guernica,” now exhibited at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, was painted entirely in black, grey, and white to capture the chaos and sombre mood of the atrocity.
On this side of the English Channel, Bridget Riley burst onto the London art scene in the 1960s with artworks solely comprised of black and white. Fascinated by visual disruption, Riley explored the perceptual potential of her work, creating movement and vibrations by alternating between black and white geometric patterns. In the decades that followed, the artist introduced colour into her compositions, but Riley’s sixties-era outputs remain among her most desirable.
The use of black and white in art endures. Graphic, bold, and timeless, and acquiring a monochromatic original print or drawing is one of the best ways to capture an artist at their compositional best. Highlights of ‘Black and White’ include limited edition lithographs created from one of Picasso’s most significant sketchbooks, a desirable Riley screenprint from her legendary sixties-era, and one of Hockney’s coveted, homemade photocopier prints.
