Belgium born Richard Tosczak says he always knew he’d be an artist. The Canadian sculptor grew up in a home where easels in the living room and a painter’s palette were part of everyday life. Both his mother and father were artists. Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. He is best known for his striking and expressive, figurative work. His bronze pieces begin as quick pen and ink--gestural drawings much like a Rembrandt sketch. This approach allows him to recall the spontaneity and the emotion of a moment in time.
“What inspires/informs my work? In a word, observation. I notice things…a gesture…an accident.” - Richard Tocszak
