An exhibition of coloured bronzes, prints & drawings

Jon Buck’s first major one-man London show offers a collection of bright, bold sculptures that defy an art world saturated in pure concept and champions the process of making. Buck blurs the boundaries between drawing and sculpture, experimenting with our traditional concepts of dimension in a rarely-seen way. His brilliant colours, simplified forms and direct themes, enable the viewer to look ‘behind the lines’ and engage in a world of humanity and nature.

As a maker you use making as a way of thinking, a way of having an intellectual interaction with yourself. You don’t come up with a concept and give it over for someone to make.

Through the reduction of detail to simple line and volume, Buck gives his ideas direct expression. His bold and joyful use of colour enhances our primary response to each piece and gives his work a playful nature which is often reflected in its title. Drawing directly onto the form reinterprets the shape and creates a dialogue between the sculptural volume of the piece and the image represented by the line. Interestingly, it also sets up a visual tension on the surface with the complimentary colours vibrating optically as the line cuts through the mass.

Human and animal heads are reoccurring subjects. As a key mechanism to human and animal communication heads provide the perfect opportunity to create small scale sculptures with a big presence. Animals, in particular birds and dogs, become personal totems for Buck, who believes they are an effective, non-confrontational way of looking at ourselves.

Behind the Lines provides the perfect opportunity to view and purchase work that is unlike anything currently explored in sculpture. Prices begin at £400, and includes a special edition of small sculptures which will only be available for the duration of this exhibition.
