Conscripted into the Wehrmacht, brief period as American prisoner of war

Began to study painting with Alfred Herzog

Apprenticeship as a stonemason with Max Rothe

Studied painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden, under Wilhelm Lachnit and Rudolf Bergander

Married Elrid Fiebig, textile designer. Their children Robert, Verena and Walter are born in 1954, 1955, 1956

Meisterschüler at the Deutsche Akademie der Künste zu Berlin, under Otto Nagel
Close cooperation with Manfred Böttcher, Ernst Schroeder and Werner Stötzer, who are also Meisterschüler. This group of artists is later described as the “Berlin School”. Harald Metzkes becomes the group’s most important member.
